This year the African Music Festival takes place for the 23rd time in Emmendingen, a pretty town near the city of Freiburg in southern Germany. The weekend will be filled with music, artistic performances, a bazar and even a parade. Find out what you will be missing out on, if you don’t go!

As the name suggests the festival’s core events are the musical performances, but there are other things that are worthwhile as well. At the center of the festival area is a huge bazar offering African art, textiles, clothes, musical instruments, and African cuisine, so be sure to take a good look around bring lots of time to discover all the stands.
If you want to practice your dance moves before or after attending the festivals main events, try one of the dance workshops on offer. In case you are more into making music yourself there are several African drumming workshops as well, highlighting the variety of African music.
On Saturday the parade starts an 1:30 p.m. and tours through the inner city for an hour. Walk along or stand by to see artistic performances and get in the mood for the concerts later on.
The musical part of the festival kicks off with a salsa/latin night on Friday the 4th at 6:00 p.m. with Susana Schnell & El otro Su. A salsa after show party will lead on through the night! For Friday night the line-up consists only of female artists for the first time. The motto of the night is reggae and the night ends as before in a after show party also including afrobeat. On Sunday, the musical events close with an African and world music themed afternoon finishing with the Queen of Afro-Pop Yemi Alade from Nigeria.
If you want to close by at all times and enjoy camping there is the possibility of camping in the neighboring town, be sure to apply early for this option.
